Les Spirituals et les Gospels des JOHNNY THOMPSON SINGERS de Philadelphie (USA) constituent une véritable rencontre avec les chants spirituels des afro-américains.

Leur directeur musical, le Révérend John Alexander Thompson, est issu d’une famille de musiciens. Son père était pianiste dans le légendaire orchestre de Jazz de Duke Ellington. Johnny Thompson est pianiste, chanteur, compositeur, auteur et arrangeur de nombreux gospels et de pas moins de neuf Gospel-Song-Plays (comédies musicales). L’ensemble voyagea sur les cinq continents et prit part à presque tous les festivals de musique renommés ; il fut également invité à se produire dans d’innombrables shows radiophoniques et télévisés. En 1977, les Johnny Thompson Singers furent distingués, à Paris, par l’ »Académie du Jazz » qui leur décerna le Prix « Mahalia Jackson ».
